The best way to change hairstyles & colors frequently without altering your own hair is to wear a wig. Unless bald or have a short afro, it is important to figure out what to do with the hair under the wig. There’s a lot more to it than just brushing your hair back and in a bun, because simply gathering hair under wig can cause breakage and fall off easily. Hair needs to be protected under the wig, and that requires a proper regimen for maintenance.
Here are the best 3 ways to wear your hair while under a wig.

1.Braids
Having hair in braids (own hair) is one of the three ideal ways to wear the hair under the wig. While not at flat as other styles, it allows for hair to be protected, and makes it easier for some women to maintain. It also allows for easier access to the scalp for cleansing and moisturizing. Simply place hair in small braids to minimize lumps or bumps under the wig.
2.Cornrows
This is the most common style to wear the hair under the wig, and allows for a flatter surface than braided hair under wig. If wearing a wig longer than a day, it is better to try cornrows, which are braids you weave tightly against your head. It does however leave only limited access to the scalp, but the hair is protected and less likely to be bulky or lumpy under the wig. Simply divide hair into small rows from front to back, and braid down the length of head.
3.Twists or flat twists

These are the easiest styles to wear under a wig, but they are also the least popular. While easy to create, they will frizz and tangle faster than braids and cornrows. Just remember to make them small so they will not leave lumps under the wig.
Tips: Things to remember when wearing a wig
- Wear a wig cap- The cap can protect the hair from the wig and keeps the hair in place and detangle while wearing the wig.
- Moisturize and allow your scalp to get air – Wearing a wig does not mean the hair is completely protected and allowed to be neglected. It must be moisturized prior to wearing a wig. Remember to moisturize before going to bed if the hair feels dry and never sleep with a wig.
- Never place a wig on a wet head – Placing a wig on top of wet hair is just asking to create a breeding ground for bacteria. Hair should always be completely dry before wearing a wig.
- Clean and condition your hair and scalp regularly – Hair and scalp need to be cleaned regularly to remove the excess sebum or even dirt. Sweat and moisturizers can accumulate and need to be removed. Take down the twists, braids, or cornrows to shampoo, deep conditioner, moisturize, and redo a fresh set of braids, twists, or cornrows. This will ensure your hair and scalp stay clean and moisturized so your hair won’t break due to fragility.
How do you keep your hair under a wig?

Massage your Scalp
Having a wig sit tightly on your head can cause the blood flow to your scalp to be reduced. Massaging your scalp can overcome this drawback, as it promotes a healthy blood flow and encourages your hair to grow. Try and do this each time you take your wig off.
Take your Wig off Before Bed
We don’t recommend sleeping in your wig – it can inflict tension on your hair and cause breakages. Give your hair and scalp a chance to breathe overnight by taking your wig off. This can go a low way in protecting your own hair throughout wearing a wig.
Shampoo your Hair
The key to healthy hair is keeping it clean. Even if you’re wearing a wig every day, it’s extremely important to make sure you are shampooing your hair at least once a week, but this varies depending on how hot or sweaty your scalp gets throughout the day. Sweat and product can build up over the course of a few days, so you should make sure your hair is always clean before putting a wig on. This is healthy care maintenance that shouldn’t be ditched when wearing a wig!
Keep on Top of Trimming
It might be that you choose to wear a wig all day every day, and assume that you don’t need to trim your own hair as much as a result. However, it’s still important that you have a regular trim to remove split ends and damaged hair. Trimming your hair keeps it healthy and promotes growth. Generally, hair should be trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks.
Wig Cap
Wig caps are a great way of protecting your natural hair. Although optional, the cap acts as a protective barrier between wig and hair, and they are brilliant at keeping your hair in place under the wig. They are an inexpensive and effective way of protecting your natural hair.
Avoid Damp Hair
Having damp natural hair under a wig is not only extremely uncomfortable but can also promote the growth of nasty bacteria. The moisture mixed with body heat and extra warmth from the layer of wig can cause the growth of mildew and germs. Avoid at all costs!
Be Careful When Braiding
Braiding can be seen as an easy way to keep your natural hair out of the way under a wig. However, if you’re doing this on a regular basis, it can actually weaken your natural hair fibres if too tight. This can start to damage your hair, so try not to braid your hair all the time. And when you are braiding, make sure the braids aren’t too tight.
Moisturise your Hair
You might notice your hair feeling dry after wearing a wig. To combat this, try using hair oils, moisturisers, or treatments to restore its moisture. This will ensure that your hair maintains nice and healthy throughout wig wear.
Take Breaks
If you have natural hair under a wig for a long period of time, it can be good to give your natural hair a break for a few days. This gives it a healthy dose of air and sunshine that can contribute towards keeping your hair healthy.
Wefted Wigs
There are various wig construction types available, but wefted wigs are ideal for those who don’t require wigs due to hair loss. This construction incorporates open wefts that allow your scalp to breathe during continued wear, which is great for helping to protect your hair under a wig!
