Wig Length

Wigs are available in different lengths. You can find them in lengths from 8 inches to 30 inches.

Wig length is the measure of hair strands from the crown to where the hair will land. The measurement conveys where the hair will fall once it is installed.

An 18 inches hair length means the unit will end at 18 inches from the crown of your head. For straight hair, this is easy to understand. The wig length is simply the length of hair strands on the unit that has straight hair.

For curly and wave wigs, the hair needs to be pulled straight to get the exact measurement. This is because the curly texture makes the hair look shorter than its actual length. So a curly texture unit might appear to be 16 inches even when the length of hair strands is between 17 to 18 inches.

There can also be slight variations in this measurement depending on the hair texture you have, how the unit has been installed, and your physical features.

Let us see how wig length is measured to get a better idea of this.

HOW TO MEASURE A WIG?

You can use a wig head to measure the wig length. If you do not have a wig head, you can simply place the unit on a flat table to measure the hair length.

  • 1: Place the wig on a wig head or lay it flat on the table. If you have a curly or wavy wig, straighten the hair gently as much as possible.
  • 2: Use a soft measuring tape to measure the longest hair strand on the unit. Make sure you measure it from the crown of the hair till the end of the hair strand.
  • 3: Note down this measurement. If you have a wig that does not have asymmetrical cut, you can follow the steps above to measure the hair length of different sections on the unit. This will give you an accurate idea of how long the hair is in each section.

UNDERSTANDING WIG LENGTH OF DIFFERENT WIG TEXTURES

The hair texture is one of the most important factors that influence how long your hair looks. Just think of the hair like a piece of string. A straight string looks longer while a curled string looks shorter. The same thing applies to wigs of different textures.

We can understand this in more detail by diving into the hair type of each wig texture.

STRAIGHT HAIR

A wig with straight hair strands will carry the look of its actual length. The simple reason for this is that straight hair does not have any curls or kinks along its entire length. So an 18 inch hair wig will fall right up to the mid-back region.

WAVY HAIR

For wavy hair, the hair will look slightly shorter than its actual length because it has bends in the hair texture. So a 12 inch shoulder-length wig may appear around 11 inches long.

CURLY HAIR

Wigs that have a curly texture will appear 1 to 2 inches shorter than the actual length of hair strands on the unit. This is because the hair has deeper curls throughout the length of the hair. So a 14 inch wig may appear 12-13 inches long.

Once you know this, you will be able to decide what look different hair lengths and hair textures will give you.
